Better Care, the only Spanish biotechnology company participating in the European Intellilung project

Better Care, a biotechnology company that develops software solutions based on artificial intelligence for continuous patient monitoring, has won the European tender for the INTELLILUNG project

Since he has extensive experience and accumulated experience in the integration of medical devices within Intensive Care Unit (ICU) environments and, in particular, of the patient's mechanical ventilation systems. The INTELLILUNG project aims to improve the care of critically ill patients with invasive mechanical ventilation, one of the most applied therapies in intensive care units (ICU) in patients with acute respiratory failure and whose effectiveness has become more evident in the fight against Covid-19. When this is not enough, in most serious cases, extracorporeal pulmonary assistance is also initiated.

However, mechanical ventilation can be potentially harmful, since an incorrect application can seriously affect organs and worsen the patient's lung injury. Therefore, continuous and exhaustive monitoring is required, as well as extensive knowledge and the understanding and interpretation in real time of the multiple signals and parameters generated by medical devices connected to a patient. To this need are added other issues related to the decision-making of clinical teams regarding mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal pulmonary assistance, not always understandable by patients and families, since the flow of communication is often complicated due to lack of time and resources or the ability of patients to understand and assimilate technical information, among others.

A solution, based on AI, to support decision-making. Faced with this challenge, the INTELLILUNG (AI-DSS) project will validate and expand an AI-based decision-making support system designed to optimize the application of mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal pulmonary assistance to improve patient care in the ICU, as well as communication between healthcare professionals and patients. To this end, Better Care will collaborate in two phases of the project. First, through its data integration suite, it will be responsible for the connectivity and integration of all the waves and parameters of the medical devices involved in the care of these patients. In this regard, the company will also analyze mechanical ventilation waves in real time to calculate ventilator asynchronies, whose early detection is a factor influencing a better patient prognosis and this early identification is possible thanks to continuous monitoring with AI-based technology.

Secondly, Better Care will intervene in sending all the real-time data generated by the different medical devices connected to a patient to the machine learning platform. In addition, it will develop an intelligent dashboard that will display all the results and will allow the automatic generation of information with simple language for patients and families, offering highly individualized information on diseases and knowledge-based disease management strategies, providing high-quality care for the patient. In short, this new digital solution will help reduce and optimize the clinical team's workload by allowing large amounts of data to be reviewed and incorporated at the same time in a decision-making support system, which is adapted to a specific patient and situation. It will also improve patient care and prognosis, thanks to a greater adjustment in mechanical ventilation and, ultimately, an optimization of management and healthcare costs. In addition, the project partners will carry out a retrospective and prospective multicenter study to validate INTELLILUNG (AI-DSS) and the patient information software.
